“(Aunt Cynthia’s Cabin’s)music, co-written and created by Brennan Justice (guitar, lead

vocals), Anthony DeFreitas (bass, vocals), and Jeremy Luvaas (drums, percussion), paints a

vivid picture of a dusty, drugged-out Western landscape, where coastal breezes give way to

arid highways and a mirage of ocotillo and rattlesnakes. The band’s name is born from a

fictional 1970s murder mystery novel dreamt up by the trio on a drunken night, capturing

their embrace of “strange and heavy” in a fitting emblem for a sound that’s as obscure as it

is familiar.

Emerging from the ruins of a surf rock project, Justice and DeFreitas began as a duo,

recording in a San Diego garage with SM57s and a mix of analog and digital reverb. Their

early EPs (Cabin Fever, Mud Room and a cover of Neil Diamond’s Solitary Man) embraced a lo-fi, trashy character, blending Dead Meadow’s hypnotic riffs, The Ventures’ surf twang,

and All Them Witches heavy yet soulful rhythm. 

The goal of the band was to record using the tools they had on-hand, prioritizing raw creation over polished production, resulting in a sound that feels like driving 90 miles an hour through the desert with the windows down.”
